Smoke

The smoke-filled air
Burns my throat.
Ash fell like snow last night.
Yet here I sit
Outdoors,
Filling my lungs
With smoke of another kind.
As without,
So with my blackening lungs.

Fog, mist, and steam have long served as nature’s soft-focus filter—obscuring detail, softening edges, and transforming the ordinary into something dreamlike. For the fine art photographer, these elements offer a natural canvas for crafting ethereal, atmospheric imagery.

Smoke, in particular, holds a unique power. Much like fog or mist, it can evoke mood, depth, and mystery—but with a raw, unpredictable energy all its own. Especially in portraiture, smoke introduces a dynamic visual texture, imbuing images with a sense of drama, tension, and otherworldliness.

Whether curling gently around a subject or flooding a frame with chaos, smoke becomes more than an effect—it becomes a presence. It lends realism, but also abstraction. It conceals, reveals, and blurs the line between what is seen and what is imagined.

This collection explores smoke not just as an aesthetic device, but as a symbol—of transience, transformation, and the often unseen forces that surround and shape us.
